Homemade Dog Food

A versatile recipe that can be changed to suit your dog’s needs. Servings depend on the size of your dog!

Ingredients

  • 10 lbs chicken legs or leg quarters
  • 4 cups organic white rice- cooked
  • 6 cups quinoa- cooked
  • 3 large organic carrots- cut up
  • 3 organic sweet potatoes- cut up
  • 1 bag frozen green beans
  • 1 bag frozen peas

Add-ins for serving

  • nutritional yeast
  • organic wheat powder
  • organic pumpkin puree

Instructions

  • Cook chicken in a large pot and remove chicken with tongs leaving the broth in the pot.
  • While the chicken cools, add the rest of the ingredients to the broth and cook until very tender. (You may need to add more water, or remove some, depending on what you started with.)
  • When the chicken is cool enough, remove it from the bones and add to the finished broth/grain/vegetable mixture.

Adding extras

  • I add a teaspoon of wheat grass in the winter when my girls have no grass to nibble on. I add nutritional yeast every time- about a tablespoon- but I have 80 lb dogs, so you may need to scale up or down. As for the pumpkin puree- I usually add a tablespoonful to keep my girls regular. Some dogs will only need pumpkin if they are have digestive issues.

Notes

Remember- this is not exact science- you really can’t mess it up!
You can substitute different meat or fish so your dog doesn’t get bored. This recipe makes a lot, especially if you have smaller dogs, so freeze the excess and pull it out as you need it!
